Will heel pain go away by itself?
Heel pain can be extremely debilitating, making it difficult to walk or even stand. If you’re suffering from heel pain, you know how frustrating it can be to find relief. But don’t despair – there are treatments available that can help. However the myth that heel pain or plantar fasciitis will fix itself just isn’t true.
Why would plantar fasciitis not resolve with time?
Research is comprehensive that heel pain and plantar fasciitis will not resolve with time. The reason for this is that heel pain and plantar fasciitis is caused by a number of biomechanical factors. These need to be assessed and treated in order for the heel pain or plantar fasciitis to resolve.
At Sydney Foot Solutions we assess and treat heel pain and plantar fasciitis with a comprehensive approach. This means we not only focus on the heel pain or plantar fasciitis itself, but also on the other contributing factors. This may include calf tightness, hamstring flexibility, hip mobility and more. These unfortunately don’t resolve without treatment.
One of the top myths about heel pain is that it will resolve after 12-18 months. What a load of rubbish! There is no evidence that I have ever seen to support this view. In fact a recent study showed comprehensively that if you don’t do something about your heel pain or plantar fasciitis then you will probably be stuck with ongoing pain. In fact this same study found that you only have a 4% chance of getting rid of plantar fasciitis if you have symptoms for 5 years.
If you’re suffering from heel pain or plantar fasciitis, don’t wait for it to resolve on its own – get help from a professional who can assess and treat the underlying causes. Book an appointment with us today.
Our clinic is in Sydney on the Northern Beaches, Manly Vale and we successfully treat plantar fasciitis all the time.
If I have plantar fasciitis should I wait and see how it goes?
The answer to this unfortunately is no. Heel pain and plantar fasciitis will not resolve with time. The reason for this is that heel pain and plantar fasciitis is caused by a number of biomechanical factors. These need to be assessed and treated in order for the heel pain or plantar fasciitis to resolve. The longer you leave it the more difficult it becomes to treat (not to mention more costly and takes longer!)
What are my options for treatment?
There are 2 way that you can do this
Orthotics
Orthotics are devices that you wear inside your shoes. They help to control the way your foot hits the ground and take some of the stress off of your heel. There are a wide variety of orthotics available on the market and it is important to find one that is comfortable for you. Talk to your podiatrist about what type of orthotic would be best for you.
Benefits of orthotics
- Quick / effective however only fit in lace up shoes
- Allow quick results
- Easy and low effort just change from shoe to shoe
Disadvantages
- Have to stay in orthotic long term
- Aren’t corrective – means you have to keep wearing the orthotics
- Reduce the muscle strength in your foot because you are reliant on the orthotics
Foot mobilisation
Foot mobilisation is a type of treatment that involves manually moving the heel bone back into its proper position. This is often used to treat heel pain caused by heel spurs or flat feet.
There are a number of different techniques that can be used for foot mobilisation. The best technique for you will depend on the cause of your heel pain.
If you suffer from heel pain, plantar fasciitis, or any other foot condition, contact your podiatrist today. Heel pain does not have to slow you down.
Benefits of foot mobilisation
If you would prefer to address the underlying cause of your heel pain foot mobilisation may be preferable to the other options the benefits of this are:
- Improved foot and ankle range of motion
- Reduced heel pain
- Improved shock absorption
- Improved balance and coordination.
- Keep wearing the shoes you love
- Don’t need orthotics
- Avoid the need for cortisone which is only a bandaid approach anyway
- Fix the underlying cause
Benefits of our treatment for heel pain and plantar fasciitis
- No surgery
- Keep wearing a variety of shoes
- No orthotics
- Keep being active through treatment
- Cost effective
- Gentle and doesn’t hurt
- Long term beneficial
- No cortisone

The reality is that in the vast majority of cases there is no need to stop walking due to heel pain as it can be effectively without stopping the things you love.
Cortisone
Cortisone is a type of medication that can be injected into the heel to reduce pain and inflammation.
Cortisone injections are usually only used as a last resort, as they can cause damage to the heel if used too often.
They should only be used for short-term relief and should not be considered a long-term solution for heel pain.
Laser therapy
Laser therapy is a type of treatment that uses low-level lasers to reduce pain and inflammation. Laser therapy can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including heel pain.
Laser therapy is a safe and effective way to reduce heel pain and get you back on your feet.
